Two Sulphur Storage Halls for OCP, Safi and Mzinda

With SOGEA Maroc, SOMALEV delivered two solid sulphur storage halls to OCP under the SP2M programme, built by 100% Moroccan teams.

100,000 tMzinda capacity
20,000 tSafi capacity
22 vaults37 m inner radius
1,800 tprecast lifted per week

Under the SP2M programme, SOGEA Maroc and SOMALEV delivered two solid sulphur storage halls to OCP Group: one on the Safi industrial platform, the other on the Mzinda site. Sulphur is an essential raw material for the production of sulphuric acid and phosphate fertilisers.

The Mzinda hall offers a storage capacity of 100,000 tonnes across 22 vaults with a 37 m inner radius; the Safi hall holds 20,000 tonnes. The two sites were run in parallel by two complete teams, with very high capacity crawler cranes, a Liebherr LR 1750/2 SX and a Terex-Demag CC2800, a fleet of auxiliary equipment and tools developed specifically for this new erection process.

The last hall completed totals nearly 20,000 tonnes of high-quality precast concrete. The teams reached a benchmark rate of nearly 1,800 tonnes of precast elements lifted per week, placed precisely at almost 30 metres, the height of a 10-storey building.

SOGEA Maroc led construction as EPC contractor, and SOMALEV handled erection as heavy lifting engineering specialist. Together, the two companies rethought methods, procedures and installation processes to improve safety and optimise lead times.
